Proverbs 4:23 GNB

Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.

NKJV says Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

You are a spirit, who has a soul and you live in a body. Your soul consists of your mind, will and emotions. Thinking takes place in your mind. The Good News Bible says be careful how you think whereas the New King James Version says keep your heart with all diligence. Other versions of the Bible say guard your heart; guard your mind.

Simply the writer is saying that you should take precaution. You need to watch what you are thinking about for your thoughts shape your life. I believe your heart (mind/soul) is like soil. It is neutral. It will produce what is sowed in it. When you watch something, listen to something, read something or even touch something you are sending information to your mind. You are sowing seeds into your mind which will grow and bear fruit.

Joyce Meyer said that your body can’t go where your mind has not been. You notice that our thoughts lead us. I can know what you are thinking about by observing what you are doing. What you constantly sow in your mind will dominate your thoughts and hence influence your actions.

You have heard of diets. People usually go on diet to maintain a certain body shape or to avoid certain allergies in their bodies. Now, have you ever thought of having a diet for your mind? Have you made a decision about what you watch and what you listen to? You realize that most people just watch and listen to anything that comes their way. They say they just can’t control it. Just like food does not just find its way into our mouths, I think information shouldn’t just find its way to us either.

Controlling what enters your mind is not an easy thing to do. That is why the New King James Version says Keep your heart with all diligence. It requires a lot of effort on our sides to do that. It is not easy, but the writer gives us a reason to make it worth pursuing. He says, For out of our hearts/minds spring forth the issues of life. I think that is a pretty good reason to guard our minds. Don’t you want to have a great life?

Fill your mind with the Word of God and positive information which will lead you to live or have a great life.
