Break the worry habit

Worry is the destructive process of occupying the mind with thoughts contrary to God’s love and care. Worry always creeps into my life when I focus on what I don’t have, but when I bring to mind all the good things that have happened in my life and give thanks for them then I suddenly free myself from worry. After that I always ask myself “now, what was I worried about?”

Worry is simply an unhealthy and destructive mental habit. You were not born with a worry habit, you acquired it. Worry is learned, because children don’t worry. As people grow they learn to focus on what is not working in their lives and compare themselves with others and hence worry. Worry is the most subtle and destructive of all human diseases. Actually the term “to worry” comes from a root word which means “to choke”. To choke is to suffocate and this reduces one’s life span. To worry is to “self-suffocate”.

The worrier is not likely to live as long as the person who learns to overcome their worries. Whatever you believe you can do, you can do, with God’s help. Break the worry habit. To eliminate worry, practise emptying the mind daily; always empty your mind of all anxiety and fear.

I believe you empty your mind by choosing to think a certain way. Philippians 4:8 says “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate (think) on these things”.

Imagination is the source of fear, but imagination is also the cure of fear. Fill the mind with thoughts of faith, hope, courage and expectancy. Faith can always overcome fear/worry. Job 3:25 says “For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, And what I dreaded has happened to me”. When you fear/worry you attract negative situations towards yourself.

Overcome worries little by little, for example reduce the number of worry words in your conversation. It is very difficult to hold back the man who believes. Always choose to speak faith words. When your mind is full of God and His Word, there is no room for worry. Always put yourself in God’s hands because there is no harm in the Lord’s hands, only good. Break the worry habit.
